Anushka Ashika Chand was filled with emotion as she graduated with honors in Nursing from the University of Fiji last week, reflecting on the sacrifices her parents made for her education. The 27-year-old was part of a larger graduating class at the Saweni campus in Lautoka.
Chand’s journey was not straightforward. Initially enrolled in an education program, she faced setbacks when her father suffered a minor stroke. This prompted her to pause her studies for a semester and reconsider her future. However, her father’s long-held dream for her to become a nurse inspired her to shift back to her true calling.
Despite her challenges, including lacking the standard Year 13 qualifications for nursing, Chand’s determination won out. Her education was made possible by her parents’ personal savings from the Fiji National Provident Fund, which they drew upon to fund her studies after she transferred from the University of the South Pacific, where she had financial support.
Her parents’ presence at her graduation meant everything to her. “There were so many times when I felt I couldn’t make it… but my parents always pushed me to do my best,” she shared. She is the first nurse in her family from her maternal side, highlighting a proud achievement within her household, especially as her elder brother works as a schoolteacher.
Looking ahead, Chand is eager to continue her education further. While she has graduated with honors, she has plans to pursue midwifery, showing her commitment to advancing in the nursing profession.
In her words of wisdom to aspiring nurses, she emphasized the importance of hope and recognizing the support of family: “Never take your parents for granted, because if you have them beside you, you can achieve anything.”
This touching story exemplifies resilience and the vital role of family support in pursuing one’s dreams. It serves as inspiration for many and highlights the value of education and perseverance in the face of adversity.
