Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a dedicated educator from Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, is proudly celebrating 15 years in the teaching profession. At 38 years old, Mr. Mataitoga reflects on his impactful journey, which has significantly transformed the lives of many students throughout his career.

His educational path began at Vulivuli Primary School, continuing through Saqani Junior Secondary School, Labasa College, and Labasa Muslim College. Initially aspiring to become a nurse to help others, he discovered his true calling in teaching after enrolling at Lautoka Teachers College. Following graduation, he returned to Ono-i-Lau, where he spent five years as an assistant teacher at the local primary school, reconnecting deeply with his roots.

After his tenure in Ono-i-Lau, Mr. Mataitoga moved to Nasinu Sangam School for three years, during which he pursued postgraduate studies and ultimately earned a master’s degree in education. Currently, he teaches Class 7 and 8 students at Onolevu District School, marking his third year in this role while dedicating the last decade to head teaching.

Recently, Mr. Mataitoga participated in Scouts leadership training, a transformative experience that enriched his approach to teaching and community service. He encourages young people to join Scouts, emphasizing its importance for developing discipline and essential leadership skills.

Looking towards the future, Mr. Mataitoga aspires to become an education officer, enabling him to make a broader impact on Fiji’s educational landscape.
