Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a dedicated teacher from the village of Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, has made a significant impact in the education sector over the past 15 years. At 38 years old, Mr. Mataitoga reflects on his journey and the influence he has had on countless students.
Growing up, he attended various schools, including Vulivuli Primary and Saqani Junior Secondary School, before advancing to Labasa College and Labasa Muslim College. Despite dreaming of becoming a nurse and helping people from a young age, he chose to pursue a career in teaching after graduating from Lautoka Teachers College.
Mr. Mataitoga’s first teaching experience was back on his home island, Ono-i-Lau, where he spent five years as an assistant teacher before moving to Nasinu Sangam School. There, he not only contributed to the education of students but also furthered his own studies by obtaining postgraduate qualifications and eventually a master’s degree in education.
Currently, Mr. Mataitoga teaches Class 7 and 8 at Onolevu District School, marking his third year in this role. Throughout his career, he has spent the last decade as a head teacher. Recently, he completed Scouts leadership training, which he describes as a rewarding experience that has deepened his understanding of teaching and community engagement.
He encourages the younger generation to join Scouts, emphasizing the importance of discipline and community involvement in shaping character and leadership skills. Mr. Mataitoga’s commitment extends beyond the classroom; he is also actively engaged in community service and aspires to take his career further by becoming an education officer to make an even bigger impact.
