Eroni Sarasau, a 19-year-old rugby talent from Kadavu, has made the bold decision to forgo his university studies to pursue his passion for rugby. Representing the national Under-20 squad, Sarasau is focused on making significant strides in his career by aiming for success in 2025. He expressed pride in his heritage, highlighting his maternal connections to Rotuma.
Having recently participated in several tours this year, Sarasau opted to prioritize rugby over education. The young athlete acknowledged the challenges of balancing education and sports, ultimately deciding to dedicate himself to rugby. He has been part of the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit for the last three years and plays for the Naitasiri Under-20 team.
Sarasau is determined to create a historic moment with his team in the upcoming year. He cites his uncle, Etonia Waqa, as an inspiration for securing a professional rugby contract, stating they share the same village roots. Emphasizing the importance of mastering the fundamentals of his position, he looks up to Mesake Doge for his unique skills in prop play.
Reflecting on his journey, Sarasau has learned a great deal about the sport, particularly the transition from high school to provincial rugby. He recognizes that competing at the national level requires immense mental and physical preparation. Having started his journey with Naitasiri at the age of 16, he has set his sights on joining the senior team next year.
Sarasau expresses gratitude towards his parents and grandparents for their unwavering support throughout his rugby journey, which began at the age of eight. He fondly remembers his upbringing in Kadavu, where his father took him to adapt to village life before continuing his education at Ratu Kadavulevu School.
