Eroni Sarasau stands firm in his decision to prioritize rugby over academic pursuits, a choice he believes will pave the way for a promising career in the sport. At just 19, the tight head prop made the significant commitment to represent Fiji on the national Under-20 squad, emphasizing his dedication to the game.
Hailing from Lomati, Nabukelevu in Kadavu and linked to Rotuma through his maternal lineage, Sarasau has set his sights on achieving great things in the sport by 2025. He acknowledges that balancing education with rugby can be challenging and ultimately decided to focus solely on his rugby career this year.
Having been a part of the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit for the past three years, Sarasau has also contributed to the Naitasiri Under-20 team. He aspires to create history with his team in 2025, reflecting on the missed opportunities of the current year. With aspirations to emulate his uncle Etonia Waqa and secure a professional rugby contract, Sarasau is determined to hone his skills, especially in mastering the fundamentals of his role.
He believes in the importance of technique and preparation, stating, “Individually, you have to know all your stunt and techniques.” Drawing inspiration from players like Mesake Doge, Sarasau understands the significance of standing out in a competitive environment.
His journey from high school to provincial rugby has been enlightening, revealing the stark differences between levels of play. He started his rugby career at the age of eight and progressed to joining Naitasiri at 16, with hopes of advancing to the senior team soon. He credits his family’s unwavering support, particularly his parents and grandparents, for his development both as a player and as an individual, having spent formative years in Kadavu.
Sarasau’s commitment to rugby and his clear strategic planning for his future in the sport paint a picture of hope and dedication. His journey serves as a reminder that with the right focus and support, young athletes can pursue their dreams while maintaining roots in their community.
