In just over a year since arriving in France, Setareki Turagacoke, an 18-year-old former Lelean Memorial School student, has quickly established his presence in the rugby scene. He made his Top 14 debut this year and also received his first Test cap as part of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians. Turagacoke was a last-minute addition to the team, stepping in for the injured lock Isoa Nasilasila.
Hailing from Dakuinuku, Sawakasa, and boasting maternal ties to Naselai, Nuku, and Tailevu, Turagacoke contributed significantly to Fiji’s 33-19 victory against Spain at José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, scoring one of the five tries during the match.
Fiji’s head coach Mick Byrne highlighted that patience was key to their success as they trailed 7-10 at halftime. The team managed to regain control in the second half, scoring four unanswered tries. Ponipate Loganimasi initiated the scoring for Fiji, followed by successful conversions from Caleb Muntz, who converted four tries in total. Other players who crossed the try line included Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and captain Waisea Nayacalevu.
Despite the challenging first half, Byrne expressed confidence in his team’s ability to hold the ball and acknowledged the need for improvements, particularly in maintaining possession and reducing errors.
Looking ahead, Fiji is set to face Ireland in their final Test match this Sunday at Aviva Stadium, Dublin. This match will be the sixth encounter between the two teams, with Ireland having previously won all five matchups, including a 35-17 victory in their last meeting during the 2022 Autumn Series.
Captain Nayacalevu shared his respect for the dynamic and physical nature of Spanish rugby and expressed enjoyment in playing at the stadium.
This promising journey of Turagacoke and the Flying Fijians showcases not only emerging talent but also the potential for growth and success as they continue to compete on the international stage. With every match, opportunities arise for players to further develop their skills and enhance their team’s competitive edge. Optimism prevails as the team prepares for their upcoming challenge against a strong Irish side.
