Vika Nakacia has overcome significant challenges in her journey to become a professional rugby player. Her dedication has been rewarded as she has earned a place on the Fiji women’s sevens team for the upcoming tournament in Dubai.

Nakacia began her rugby career in 2020, initially playing rugby league before transitioning to sevens two years later. She is a member of Ezers, a newly formed club, and previously played for the Namoli Wests Tigers in rugby league, where the team reached the semi-finals.

Despite facing skepticism about women’s participation in rugby and financial struggles to acquire equipment, Nakacia remains resolute. She often walks long distances for training due to a lack of bus fare. Her family initially disapproved of her rugby ambitions, and she made the bold decision to focus on the sport instead of completing her education.

Now, as a member of the national team, Nakacia is not only optimistic about her rugby career but also plans to finish high school and pursue an accounting degree. She encourages young girls to believe in themselves and chase their dreams, emphasizing that with faith, anything is achievable.

Nakacia looks up to Fiji men’s sevens player Jerry Tuwai, admiring his skills and finding inspiration in his advice to stay committed to her goals.

This story highlights the tenacity and determination of emerging athletes like Nakacia, who defy societal norms and personal challenges to pave their own path in sports. Her journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with resilience and support, dreams can become a reality.

Overall, Nakacia’s achievements not only mark a personal victory but also symbolize the growing recognition of women’s rugby in Fiji, showcasing the potential for future development in the sport.
