Vika Nakacia has overcome significant challenges in her pursuit of a rugby career. Her dedication has recently been recognized as she earned a spot on the Fiji women’s sevens team for the upcoming Dubai tournament.
Nakacia began her rugby journey in 2020 playing league, eventually transitioning to sevens rugby two years later. She plays for Ezers, a club that emerged last year, and previously contributed to the Namoli Wests Tigers, helping them reach the semi-finals.
Despite facing criticism regarding women’s participation in rugby and struggling to afford proper equipment, Nakacia uses these challenges to enhance her skills. She has often walked long distances to training when transportation was not an option, reflecting her commitment to the sport.
Initially, her parents were not supportive of her rugby ambitions. Nakacia started playing while in Year 13 at Ba Provincial Free Bird Institute in Lautoka, although she did not complete her education at that time. However, with her inclusion in the team, she is now motivated to finish her high school education and pursue a degree in accounting.
Encouraging other young girls, she said, “Trust yourself; if you want to try rugby, then you can. With God’s plan, nothing is impossible.” She also mentioned her admiration for Fiji men’s sevens player Jerry Tuwai, whose advice to trust the process and stay focused has been impactful for her.
In summary, Nakacia’s journey highlights resilience and determination in the face of adversity, symbolizing hope for aspiring female athletes. Her story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with perseverance and faith, one can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.
This is a bright chapter not only for Nakacia but also for women’s rugby in Fiji, encouraging future generations to pursue their sporting passions.
