Vika Nakacia has overcome significant challenges in her journey to become a professional rugby player. Her dedication and perseverance have culminated in her selection for the Fiji women’s sevens team, set to compete in the upcoming tournament in Dubai.
Starting her rugby journey in 2020 with rugby league, Nakacia transitioned to sevens rugby two years ago. She plays for Ezers, a newly formed club, and previously competed with the Namoli Wests Tigers, where her team reached the semi-finals. Despite the critics who believe rugby is unsuitable for women, Nakacia remains focused on improvement and self-development.
She has faced financial obstacles, often lacking the funds to buy proper equipment or even afford bus fare to training sessions. In those times, she walks from Kashmir to Nadovu Park and back to ensure she trains. Initially, her parents were not supportive of her rugby pursuits, especially after she decided to leave school during Year 13 at Ba Provincial Free Bird Institute in Lautoka.
Now that she has made the national team, Nakacia is setting her sights on completing her high school education and plans to pursue a degree in accounting. She encourages young girls to believe in themselves, stating, “If you want to try rugby, then you can. With God’s plan, nothing is impossible.”
Nakacia also expresses admiration for Fiji men’s sevens player Jerry Tuwai, who has inspired her to trust the process and continue striving toward her goals.
This story not only highlights Nakacia’s remarkable resilience but also serves as an inspiring reminder of the potential within young athletes, particularly young women, to break barriers and achieve their dreams. With her determination, she exemplifies that challenges can be overcome, and success is attainable with dedication and faith.
