Siteri Namere Nanovo’s recent achievement of being named dux at Saint Thomas High School in Lautoka is a remarkable story of perseverance and motivation. Unlike many of her peers who enjoy familial support, Ms. Nanovo has faced significant challenges since primary school, including balancing home chores and preparing meals before attending class.
At just 18 years old, Ms. Nanovo and her five siblings have been raised by their father, Ratu Sela Vunakasi Nanovo. “This dux trophy is for my father,” she expressed. He has devoted himself to their welfare, emphasizing the importance of education for a brighter future. Ms. Nanovo’s mother left the family during her early childhood, resulting in her father becoming both a mother and father figure to the siblings.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Ms. Nanovo shared, “Witnessing my father’s struggles fueled my determination to study hard and aim for university, as I aspire for a life beyond our current circumstances.” She is committed to giving back to her father and hopes to provide him with a comfortable life in return for his sacrifices.
Residing in Natabua, within proximity to the school, the family works together, with Ms. Nanovo and her sisters sharing household responsibilities and supporting younger siblings in their studies. She expressed profound gratitude towards her father, acknowledging his relentless efforts in raising them and instilling in them the value of education. “Despite our hardships, he continually encourages us, reminding us that better days lie ahead,” she affirmed.
Credit for her time management and academic focus goes to her faith, as she credits divine strength for her accomplishments. Ms. Nanovo is now planning to pursue a law degree at the University of Fiji next year.
This inspiring narrative showcases the strength of family bonds and the profound impact of determination and hard work towards achieving one’s goals. As Ms. Nanovo takes on the next step in her academic journey, it not only emphasizes the potential that lies within individuals facing adversity but also serves as a testament to the importance of education as a pathway to a better future.
