Kelepi Salakawa, a determined 67-year-old dairy farmer from Tonia Village in Tailevu, has successfully transformed a challenging environment into a flourishing dairy farm on his 104 acres in Naiyala, Wainibuka.

His farming journey began in 1972 when he attended Navuso Agriculture School, where he gained practical knowledge that would shape his future. With savings accumulated from his studies, Kelepi purchased cattle and started a modest farm on mataqali Navinaka land. A significant turning point came in 2000 when, after consulting with livestock officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, he decided to focus on dairy farming. By selling his initial stock, he was able to acquire dairy breeds from Koronivia Livestock Research, marking the start of his dedicated path in this sector.

Kelepi has refined his milking skills while adapting to changing market prices and unpredictable weather. He practices hand milking, which not only connects him closely with his cows but also allows him to monitor any subtle changes in their health and behavior. This personalized approach fosters trust and familiarity, enriching his experience as a farmer.

Currently, Kelepi manages a herd of 105 cattle and produces 80 liters of milk daily for the Waidewara chilling center. Looking ahead, he aspires to introduce milking machines and cultivate pasture for feed, demonstrating his commitment to enhancing his farm’s productivity.

Kelepi expresses gratitude to the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for their ongoing support, particularly in areas like TB testing and introducing improved dairy breeds. His perseverance has allowed him to provide for his family and support his children’s education while investing in his farm.

He encourages others facing challenges: “Do not give up. Rest, but keep going. Focus on what supports your family, and remain content.” Supported by the 2023/2024 Dairy Extension Program, Kelepi continues to thrive, embodying the significant benefits of dedication and community support in achieving agricultural success.

This story is an inspiring example of how determination, training, and community assistance can lead to remarkable outcomes in the agricultural sector. Kelepi’s journey is not just about personal success but also serves as a motivation for others in the farming community.
