Joshika Lata’s journey embodies the essence of resilience and hope, celebrating graduation as a profound milestone in life. As the General Manager of the JP Bayly Trust, a charitable organization committed to assisting those in need, her story resonates with many who have faced adversity in pursuit of education and self-improvement.
Starting her educational journey in 1990 at the Frank Hilton School for students with disabilities, Ms. Lata confronted various challenges early on, due to a physical deformity in her arms. Her experiences included overcoming bullying and facing significant societal obstacles. Nevertheless, she remained undeterred, stating, “Growing up in a poor family, I recognised the transformative power of education.”
After completing her secondary education at DAV College in Nabua, Ms. Lata pursued a diploma in business management at the Fiji Institute of Technology, graduating in 2005. She began her career as a spare parts clerk but very soon transitioned into accounting roles, fueled by her ambition and inspiration from her father. Juggling full-time work and studies, she earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from the Fiji National University (FNU) and subsequently a postgraduate degree.
Since joining the JP Bayly Trust in 2018, Ms. Lata’s outstanding performance led to her appointment as General Manager in April 2024, a moment that left her in tears of joy. She credits the support from her family and colleagues for her success, emphasizing the importance of education, experience, and exposure in her professional growth.
Ms. Lata is now passionately dedicated to mentoring others, particularly young adults facing similar challenges. She expressed her commitment to being a role model, stating, “I can inspire new recruits at the trust and youths like me to strive for success, regardless of adversity.”
Her inspiring ascent in her career illustrates the impact of perseverance and community support. By sharing her experience, Ms. Lata hopes to motivate others to believe in their capabilities and to never lose hope, reinforcing the idea that, with dedication and support, anything is possible.
