Ratu Manasa Radrotini Gwen, a recent graduate of the University of Fiji, attributes his success to a strong support system that included his mother, grandmother, and educators. Reflecting on his journey after earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, he recognizes the critical role each of these figures played in overcoming challenges throughout his education.
Raised primarily by his grandmother in the village of Nabaitavo, Naitasiri, Mr. Gwen shared how her teachings instilled values of hard work and resilience. She often emphasized the significance of education, stating it is the key to a better life. After her passing when he was just 15, her absence motivated him to continue striving for academic excellence. “I had to keep going, for her and for my mother,” Mr. Gwen said.
His educational path included attending Lomaivuna High School, Naitasiri High School, and Dudley High School for Form 7. Despite facing financial hardships as a child of a single parent, he persevered by holding onto the memory of his grandmother and honoring her legacy through education. He recalls moments of uncertainty, but the sacrifices made by his mother fueled his determination to succeed and complete his degree.
Now, proudly donning his cap and gown, Mr. Gwen sees this achievement as not just personal triumph but a collective victory for his family and community. He aims to give back, inspired by those who helped him along the way. “No matter where you come from, with hard work and determination, anything is possible,” he asserts.
This story aligns with the journeys of others like Manaini Lesavua and Lafaele Tominiko, who also reflect on the importance of support systems during their educational pursuits. Both individuals, with family sacrifices and personal perseverance, have showcased the profound impact of communal support on achieving academic dreams.
These narratives highlight a resounding message: no matter the challenges encountered, the power of community and dedication can lead to extraordinary outcomes, fostering hope and encouraging others to pursue their goals.
