Kelepi Salakawa, a determined 67-year-old dairy farmer from Tonia Village in Tailevu, has successfully turned a challenging landscape into a productive dairy operation on his 104 acres in Naiyala, Wainibuka. His journey began in 1972 when he enrolled at Navuso Agriculture School, where hands-on experience on the farm shaped the foundation of his future in agriculture.

With initial savings from his studies, Kelepi purchased cattle and established a modest farm on land belonging to mataqali Navinaka. A pivotal shift occurred in 2000 when, after consulting with livestock officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, he transitioned to dairy farming. He sold off his initial stock and acquired dairy cow breeds from Koronivia Livestock Research, dedicating himself to this new path.

Kelepi has refined his milking skills over the years, skillfully adapting to the challenges posed by fluctuating market prices and unpredictable weather patterns. He practices hand milking, a method that not only develops a unique bond with his cows but also allows him to be attuned to their health and behavior. This personalized approach fosters a relationship of trust and familiarity that he deeply values.

Today, Kelepi manages a herd of 105 cattle, producing 80 liters of milk daily for the Waidewara chilling center. He remains ambitious, with aspirations to introduce milking machines and cultivate pasture to enhance feed for his cattle. He expresses gratitude towards the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for their ongoing support, which has included advice on introducing Brown Swiss breeds and assistance with vital needs like fencing and TB testing to maintain the health of his herd.

Through determination and hard work, Kelepi has provided for his family, contributed to his children’s education, and reinvested in his farm. His encouraging message for others facing hardships is, “Do not give up. Rest, but keep going. Focus on what supports your family, and remain content.” With continued backing from the 2023/2024 Dairy Extension Program, Kelepi exemplifies how dedication and community support can drive agricultural success.

In summary, Kelepi Salakawa’s story illustrates how perseverance, adaptability, and a strong connection to the community can lead to remarkable achievements in farming, ultimately creating a brighter future for himself and his family. His journey serves as an inspiration for many, highlighting the importance of chasing dreams despite challenges.
