Emotions ran high in a small room at Vodofone Arena as the Sagar family gathered to celebrate an important milestone in the life of their daughter, Priyashna Shivangi Sagar, 21. Hailing from Nasau, Nadi, Priyashna’s parents, Sunita Devi, 56, and Ram Sagar, 56, were overwhelmed with tears of joy as their daughter received the Best Student Award for her Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Priyashna is currently studying at the Fiji National University, Namaka Campus, where she specializes in Economics and Accounting. She attributes her success to a strong commitment to discipline and hard work, having faced significant financial challenges throughout her upbringing.

Reflecting on her childhood, Ms. Sagar expressed, “I grew up in a family where financial bearings were a major challenge.” With two older siblings working to support the family, Priyashna witnessed her father take on various casual jobs to ensure that all his children could stay in school. Despite these hardships, she maintained her focus on education.

Being the youngest, Priyashna noted the significance of her parents’ tears during the ceremony, feeling that her achievements had made them proud. Her academic journey has been impressive; she was recognized as Dux in Year 10 at Mulomulo Primary School and placed second in her final year at Mulomulo Secondary School. Through the National Toppers Scholarship, she could successfully complete her studies.

She credits her eldest brother as her biggest supporter, as he encouraged her to prioritize her education over seeking work to help the family. This emotional support proved invaluable, especially during tough times.

Her mother, deeply moved by Priyashna’s success, spoke about the importance of various forms of financial assistance that had been a lifeline for their family. “The bus fare assistance, the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service, and other support helped us tremendously,” Ms. Devi remarked. Her pride in her daughter’s accomplishments was palpable, showcasing that their challenges were ultimately rewarding.

Now, Priyashna Sagar has embarked on her professional career, having secured a position at Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG) International Limited.

This story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, family support, and the transformative power of education. Priyashna’s journey reflects hope and determination, inspiring others facing similar obstacles to pursue their dreams unapologetically.
