A remarkable showcase of resilience and transformation took place at the Fiji National University (FNU) Namaka Campus, where 46 young individuals celebrated their graduation with certificates in Barbering, Baking & Patisserie, and Tour Guiding. This event held special significance for many of the graduates, who have overcome immense challenges, including poverty and homelessness, to reach this milestone.
During the graduation ceremony, Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru commended the graduates for their perseverance and encouraged them to reflect on their journeys, saying, “You’ve faced challenges and overcome them, and you’ve learned to persevere through difficult times.” He highlighted the importance of their experiences, indicating that these lessons will play a crucial role in shaping their futures.
The graduates benefited from targeted training programs backed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which aimed to empower marginalized and disadvantaged youth. Saukuru praised the collaboration with FNU, particularly highlighting the role of the School of Tourism, Hospitality & Travel, in providing these vital courses. He noted, “Your progress shows your potential and highlights the positive impact of youth training programs.”
A significant aspect of this initiative is the ongoing commitment from the Coalition Government to foster inclusive education and training for youth facing challenges. The minister stated, “These are not just certificates. They are stepping stones to independence, empowerment, and economic participation.” With practical training completed over several months, many graduates are now ready to embark on paths toward employment, entrepreneurship, or further education.
Reflecting on the broader context, this ceremony underlined a wider movement within Fiji, as similar programs have been established to support vulnerable populations. In previous initiatives, like the “Easter on the Park” program, street dwellers received essential skills training aimed at rebuilding their lives, further showing the government’s dedication to uplifting those in need.
The graduation ceremony concluded with a renewed sense of optimism, reminding all participants that even the hardest beginnings can lead to bright futures with the right support and opportunities. This development not only highlights individual achievements but also exemplifies a collective societal movement toward creating a better future for all young Fijians.
