Kelepi Salakawa, a determined 67-year-old dairy farmer from Tonia Village in Tailevu, has turned his challenging circumstances into an impressive success story on his 104-acre dairy farm in Naiyala, Wainibuka. His journey began back in 1972 when he attended Navuso Agriculture School, where hands-on experience on the farm played a crucial role in shaping his future.
With the savings he accumulated from his studies, Kelepi invested in cattle and established a modest farm with a simple structure on mataqali Navinaka land. In the year 2000, Kelepi made a significant change by consulting livestock officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, leading him to focus on dairy farming. By selling off his initial stock, he was able to purchase dairy cow breeds from Koronivia Livestock Research, solidifying his commitment to this new venture.
Over the years, Kelepi has developed his milking skills, learning to adapt to fluctuating market prices and changing weather conditions. He practices hand milking, which not only enhances the quality of care he provides to his cows but also fosters a strong bond, enabling him to detect subtle changes in their health and behavior. This personal approach has cultivated mutual trust and familiarity with his animals.
Currently, Kelepi oversees a herd of 105 cattle, producing an impressive 80 liters of milk daily, which is delivered to the Waidewara chilling center. Looking ahead, he has plans to introduce milking machines and create pasture for feed, aiming to further enhance his farm’s productivity.
Kelepi expresses gratitude to the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for their ongoing support, which has been crucial for his development and includes guidance on introducing Brown Swiss breeds as well as assistance with fencing and Tuberculosis (TB) testing to maintain the health of his livestock.
Through his resilience and hard work, Kelepi has not only provided for his family but has also funded his children’s education and invested back into his farm. His advice to others facing hardships resonates with many: “Do not give up. Rest if you need to, but keep moving forward. Focus on what supports your family and maintain contentment.”
With the backing of the 2023/2024 Dairy Extension Program, Kelepi’s dedication continues to pay off, serving as a testament to the positive impact of hard work, perseverance, and community support in achieving agricultural success.
In summary, Kelepi’s journey exemplifies resilience and the power of determination. His story holds a hopeful message for aspiring farmers and those facing challenges: success is achievable with hard work and the right support.
