Sefeti Jiuta, a notable 23-year-old from the Nadonumai settlement near Lami, has reached a significant educational milestone by becoming the first member of his family to graduate from university. Raised in a challenging environment where hard work was essential, Jiuta’s parents, despite their lack of formal education, worked diligently to support him and his three older siblings.
Jiuta’s educational journey included attending several schools, such as Suva Methodist Primary, Dudley Intermediate, and Dudley High School, finishing his secondary education at Lelean Memorial School. Although his academic achievements did not earn him many accolades, his determination led him to the University of the South Pacific (USP), where he graduated—marking a pivotal achievement for his family as none of his siblings had previously completed their tertiary education.
Tragedy struck when Jiuta’s father passed away during his participation in the JENESYS program in Japan at the young age of 21. In the face of this grief, Jiuta focused positively on his education and discovered the MEXT scholarship through research on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, ultimately applying successfully.
Recently, Jiuta received an official offer to pursue a Master’s degree in Japan, which he considers a “huge blessing.” This opportunity comes after overcoming uncertainties post-graduation, and he passionately encourages younger generations to chase their dreams regardless of doubts, promoting the transformative power of higher education.
Jiuta’s inspiring journey resonates with other narratives of resilience in the region, including those of Lafaele Tominiko and Joshika Lata, who also navigated substantial challenges. Their stories serve as powerful motivators for young individuals to overcome obstacles and strive for excellence in education.
Jiuta’s experience not only underscores his personal triumph but also raises hope for others facing similar challenges, showcasing that with dedication and support, achieving one’s dreams is indeed possible.
