Semi Seruvakula, a 29-year-old from Navutu Village in Naitasiri, overcame significant hurdles to reach a turning point in his life. Eleven years ago, he struggled with peer pressure, which forced him to abandon his mechanical engineering studies. However, this struggle paved the way for a new journey.

On Thursday, Semi celebrated a notable achievement, receiving his Level 3 Certificate in Fabrication and Welding during the graduation ceremony at the Vodafone Arena hosted by Fiji National University (FNU). He reflected on his journey, recalling how he initially chose to stay home to farm with his father, only to be motivated by a friend’s suggestion to work as a security officer. This job eventually led him to enroll in the welding course, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

Financing his studies with his security earnings, Semi displayed unwavering determination. His father, Venieli Cakausese, who is also the village headman, expressed immense pride in his son’s resilience. He emphasized that the lessons learned through challenges contribute to character development, encouraging young individuals to strive for education and seize available opportunities.

After a year and a half of commitment at FNU’s Samabula campus, Semi is now employed at Fast Engineering, where he finds fulfillment in his work. He attributes his progress to his faith, stating, “I’m leaning on God to direct my next steps,” as he looks to the future with optimism.

Semi’s journey serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating that through perseverance and the right mindset, it’s possible to overcome personal challenges and build a successful career.

This story reinforces the importance of resilience and the potential for growth after setbacks. It highlights a hopeful narrative where belief in oneself and faith can help forge new paths, especially for the younger generation navigating their own challenges.
