Sainimere Kurumaira, a resilient 23-year-old from Waikete, Tailevu, embodies the belief that tolerance and perseverance can lead to a better life. Drawing strength from her mother’s encouragement, she has faced significant challenges, including the loss of her brother just a year after her birth and the hardships of a poverty-stricken upbringing.
Kurumaira recounts her childhood, stating, “We lived in extreme poverty, and my dad’s salary as a salesman was not enough to cover our needs. To support the family, my mum worked as a housemaid.” From a young age, she recognized the struggles her family faced, which spurred her determination to excel academically. Her mother’s advice, articulated in their local dialect as “Na kwa vinaka na vosota,” meaning “it is good to tolerate it a bit more,” has served as a guiding principle in her life.
Despite the difficulties, Kurumaira’s resolve has enabled her to thrive educationally and socially. She reflects, “I have learned that hardships can be a powerful motivator, shaping us into stronger and more resilient individuals.” Her family’s support, combined with her own determination, has helped her achieve significant milestones, including completing her education and forming meaningful relationships.
A graduate of the University of the South Pacific, Kurumaira originally aspired to become an anthropologist or forensic psychologist but found her passion in psychology and education, believing they would best enable her to help others. During her university years, she faced various challenges, including academic stress, social pressures, and financial difficulties exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, she credits her faith and moments of quiet reflection for helping her stay grounded.
Kurumaira graduated on September 6, 2024, a bittersweet moment marked by the absence of some loved ones who had passed away. Supported by her father, sister, and friends, she celebrated her achievements with gratitude.
Currently, she is completing an internship at Greenhouse Coworking, which she describes as a valuable opportunity for personal growth and networking. In her free time, she enjoys streaming various music genres, listening to true crime podcasts, and socializing over kava.
Looking ahead, Kurumaira aspires to pursue a master’s degree in forensic psychology or forensic science within the next five years. She encourages the younger generation to remain focused on their goals, be open to new experiences, and embrace challenges. “Never give up,” she advises, emphasizing the importance of faith and self-discovery in the journey toward achieving one’s dreams.
