Priyashna Shivangni Sagar’s journey from financial hardship to academic success epitomizes the power of determination and the importance of familial support. Recently honored as the top graduate in Bachelor of Commerce and Accounting at the Fiji National University (FNU), she expressed deep gratitude for the values instilled in her by her parents.

Reflecting on her upbringing, Ms. Sagar noted, “My parents have always taught me that education is the key to success.” This foundational lesson has driven her throughout her education journey. As the youngest of three, she approached her studies with vigor, motivated significantly by her older brother. He played a crucial role in her education, ensuring that she remained focused and inspired despite their family’s financial struggles.

Her parents, Sunita Devi and Ram Sagar, tirelessly worked to provide for their children’s education, often facing significant financial barriers. Ms. Sagar shared the hardships they endured, stating, “We would often have to stand at the head teacher’s office because we couldn’t pay the fees.” However, despite these challenges, her academic performance flourished. Assistance from educational programs provided vital support, allowing her to continue her studies without plunging her family deeper into debt.

Now employed since January, Ms. Sagar, along with her brother’s support, is optimistic about building a brighter future for her family. “My brother has a job, I’m working and we’re slowly getting there,” she remarked with hope.

In her reflection, she aims to inspire other young individuals facing similar obstacles, emphasizing that hardships do not last forever. “I want kids to know that it’s not always going to be hard — there are better days ahead,” she encourages, presenting a message of hope and resilience.

This story not only celebrates one young woman’s achievements but also serves as a beacon of encouragement for many, reminding us that with perseverance and support, brighter days are indeed possible.
