Kelepi Salakawa, a determined 67-year-old dairy farmer from Tonia Village in Tailevu, has successfully turned his challenging 104-acre landscape into a flourishing dairy farm in Naiyala, Wainibuka. His journey commenced in 1972 when he enrolled in Navuso Agriculture School, where he gained invaluable practical knowledge that would serve as the cornerstone of his future endeavors.

After saving funds from his education, Kelepi purchased cattle and established a humble farm on mataqali Navinaka land. In the year 2000, with advice from livestock officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, he made a significant shift towards dairy farming. He sold off his initial stock to acquire dairy breeds from Koronivia Livestock Research and has been dedicated to this path ever since.

Kelepi has cultivated essential skills in milking while successfully adapting to the challenges of fluctuating market prices and unpredictable weather conditions. His practice of hand milking allows him to establish a special connection with his cows, enabling him to detect subtle changes in their health and behavior. This intimate approach fosters a bond of trust and familiarity that he deeply cherishes.

At present, Kelepi manages a herd of 105 cattle, producing an impressive 80 litres of milk daily, which he supplies to the Waidewara chilling centre. Looking to the future, Kelepi has aspirations to introduce milking machines and develop pasture for feeding his herd.

He expresses gratitude to the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for their ongoing support, particularly in introducing improved Brown Swiss breeds and assisting with vital services like fencing and tuberculosis (TB) testing, ensuring his farm maintains a TB-free status.

Through sheer determination, Kelepi has not only provided for his family but has also funded his children’s education and reinvested in his farm. His inspiring advice to others who may be facing challenges is clear: “Do not give up. Rest, but keep going. Focus on what supports your family and remain content.”

With the backing of the 2023/2024 Dairy Extension Program, Kelepi continues to prosper, illustrating how dedication combined with community support can lead to agricultural success. His story serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring farmers, showcasing the transformative power of resilience and commitment to one’s work.
