From Struggles to Stardom: How Ana Seru Became a Cadet Champion

Ana Seru, a Year Nine student from the Raiwaqa area, was recognized as the top female cadet during the John Wesley College passing-out parade at Albert Park, Suva, yesterday. Growing up in a densely populated area faced with social challenges, Ana described her cadet training as a significant experience.

At just 14 years old, Ana remarked on the difficulties of enduring the humid conditions while mastering the marching techniques over the course of a week. Despite her less-than-ideal upbringing, she emphasized her commitment to excellence in her studies.

“I knew my upbringing was not ideal, but I strived for excellence every time I stepped into the classroom,” Ana stated. “The only way to improve my life is through education.”

Originating from Naivucini in Naitasiri, Ana highlighted the importance of making sound decisions, especially in navigating peer pressure, a lesson she learned from her family.

She dedicated her award to her siblings and her father, who was present at the event. “I’m the introvert in the family, and I hope this award will inspire my younger siblings to believe that they can achieve anything if they set their minds to it,” she said.

Encouraged by her achievement, her younger siblings, currently in primary school, expressed their aspirations to join secondary school and participate in cadet training following her inspiring performance.
