Vika Nakacia has overcome significant challenges in her journey to become a rugby player. Her dedication has garnered her a spot on the Fiji women’s sevens team for the upcoming tournament in Dubai, marking a significant milestone in her athletic career.
Nakacia embarked on her rugby journey in 2020, initially playing rugby league before transitioning to sevens rugby just two years ago. She currently represents Ezers, a club established last year, and previously played for the Namoli Wests Tigers, where her team reached the semifinals.
Despite facing criticism regarding women’s participation in rugby and dealing with financial constraints that make it difficult to afford proper gear, Nakacia channels this adversity into motivation to enhance her skills. She recalls moments where she couldn’t afford bus fare to training, often walking from Kashmir to Nadovu Park to practice.
Initially, her parents were not supportive of her decision to play rugby. Nakacia began her rugby career in Year 13 at the Ba Provincial Free Bird Institute in Lautoka, but she did not finish her education at that time. However, after making the national team, she is now motivated to complete her high school education and aspire towards a degree in accounting.
She encourages young girls to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams, stating, “if you want to try rugby, then you can. With God’s plan, nothing is impossible.” A fan of Fiji’s men’s sevens player Jerry Tuwai, she recalls a memorable encounter with him, where he advised her to trust the process and remain determined in her pursuits.
This story of resilience and determination is a powerful testament to the potential of women in sports. Nakacia’s experiences can inspire young girls to overcome obstacles in pursuit of their passions, highlighting that hard work and faith can lead to extraordinary opportunities. Her journey not only advocates for women’s rights in sports but also emphasizes the importance of education, showing that it is never too late to achieve one’s dreams.
