Rewa football midfielder Tevita Waranaivalu has paid tribute to his family and teammates for their unwavering support during challenging periods in his career.
Waranaivalu made history by becoming the first Fijian footballer to receive the inaugural Digicel Fiji Premier League Golden Ball Award at the Fiji Football Association’s award ceremony held at the Sugar Cane Growers Building in Lautoka on Friday night.
The player from Naisomua, Tailevu reflected on the significant challenges he faced over the past two seasons, particularly with injuries and weight management issues. “I have been through a lot,” he expressed, noting the ups and downs he experienced, including an early-season injury that tested his resolve.
“I had to push myself to finish the season,” he added, mentioning his experiences sitting on the bench and playing only brief moments in matches. “Despite those challenges, I never lost hope and worked hard, especially on my diet, as I was struggling with being overweight.”
Waranaivalu also acknowledged his family’s importance, stating that they have consistently supported him throughout his football journey. “This award is a credit to the whole team,” he said. “Without them, I couldn’t have achieved this. We’ve grown as a team, overcoming various financial struggles together, and that team spirit has been essential.”
He dedicated the award to his two sons, Richard and King David. Earlier in the month, Waranaivalu also received the player of the tournament award at the Police Inter Formation Championship 2024 in Nausori.
