Kelepi Salakawa, a determined 67-year-old dairy farmer from Tonia Village in Tailevu, has turned a challenging environment into a flourishing dairy operation on his 104 acres in Naiyala, Wainibuka. His inspiring journey began in 1972 at Navuso Agriculture School, where he gained practical experience that laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.

With the savings he accumulated during his studies, Kelepi started his agricultural journey by purchasing cattle and establishing a small farm on mataqali Navinaka land. In 2000, after consultations with livestock officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, he switched to dairy farming. He sold his initial stock to acquire specialized dairy cow breeds from Koronivia Livestock Research, marking a significant step in his career.

Kelepi has developed his milking skills over the years, skillfully adapting to changing market prices and weather conditions. He practices hand milking, which not only enhances his technical abilities but also fosters a deep connection with his cows, enabling him to detect subtle changes in their health and behavior. This approach creates an atmosphere of trust that he cherishes.

Managing a herd of 105 cattle, Kelepi currently produces 80 liters of milk daily for the Waidewara chilling center. He has plans for the future, including the introduction of milking machines and the cultivation of pasture to support his cattle’s feed needs. He expresses gratitude to the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for their ongoing support, especially for their guidance on best practices and assistance with implementing TB testing programs to keep his farm disease-free.

Through sheer perseverance, Kelepi has not only been able to provide for his family and fund his children’s education but has also reinvested in his farm. His message to those facing obstacles is straightforward: “Do not give up. Rest, but keep going. Focus on what supports your family, and remain content.”

With the support from the 2023/2024 Dairy Extension Program, Kelepi’s story exemplifies the power of dedication and community support in achieving agricultural success. His journey is a beacon of hope, showcasing how hard work and commitment can lead to fulfilling outcomes, inspiring many others in the farming community to follow in his footsteps.
