From Struggle to Song: The Healing Power of Fiji’s Tomasi Radakua

Many talented musicians find success not purely through luck but by uncovering a profound sense of comfort in their artistry. This sentiment is embodied by 39-year-old Tomasi Radakua, who is gradually making his name known in Fiji’s music scene.

Originating from Nukuloa, Gau in Lomaiviti Province, Radakua’s musical journey began in Vatuwaqa, Suva, where he was raised in a household steeped in faith and community involvement. His parents were dedicated members of the Vatuwaqa Methodist Church, where Radakua’s passion for music first took root. At the tender age of eight, he joined the church choir, participating in various church events and conferences that nurtured his singing abilities.

Radakua’s parents, who were both choir members, fostered a supportive atmosphere shrouded in musical devotion that accompanied him throughout his formative years. His educational path led him from Nabua Primary School to Namalata District School, and further to Tailevu North College and Ratu Sukuna Memorial School. During this time, Radakua found inspiration in the music of Isireli Gumatua, whose artistry deeply influenced him.

However, Radakua’s life took an unforeseen turn after high school when he started working at Flour Mills of Fiji (now FMF Foods Ltd). He encountered personal challenges related to mental health, independent of his work environment. In 2014, he faced a mental illness that required his admission to St Giles Hospital. After his recovery, he returned to the workforce, dedicating 12 years to FMF before resigning in 2019 to care for his elderly parents.

During this period, Radakua’s connection to music deepened significantly. It evolved from a source of joy to a crucial healing mechanism. He described how music provided him an outlet for self-expression and coping, especially after his experiences at St Giles. This led him to begin writing his own songs, inspired by his faith and personal struggles. Although his music initially went unnoticed, the songwriting process itself became a vital part of his healing journey.

Radakua feels that the lyrics he writes are inspired divinely, as he uses his music to reach and motivate others. His commitment to mental health advocacy flourished when he began working with the Psychiatric Survivors Association as an advocacy and awareness officer. In this role, he witnesses the journeys of individuals grappling with mental health challenges, which further ignites his passion for creating resonant music.

His latest single, “Nothing About Us, Without Us,” has recently attracted attention as his contribution for the International Day of People with Disabilities. This powerful message speaks to the belief that everyone has gifts within them, emphasizing the importance of expressing those talents. Radakua encourages others to believe in their potential, reinforcing the notion that they can create meaningful change in the world.

This inspiring narrative underscored by resilience and hope serves as a reminder of the transformative power of music and the importance of mental health advocacy. Radakua’s journey illustrates the beautiful intersection between personal challenges and artistic expression, showcasing how creativity can flourish even in the face of adversity.
