Football legend Jovilisi Rara, now 51, is reflecting on his lengthy and passionate career in the sport, which began in 1995 when he joined Suva. Over the next eight years, Rara developed his skills and gained invaluable experience playing alongside some of the most talented players of his generation.
He recalls the evolution of football in Fiji, noting how the sport used to share the limelight with rugby, but ultimately ignited a deep-seated passion for soccer during his primary school days. “Times have changed; during my time, soccer was big alongside rugby,” he reminisced. Rara fondly remembers the highs of his time with Suva, especially celebrating victories in prestigious tournaments like the Fiji Fact and the Battle of the Giants (BOG). “Winning those championships felt monumental, almost like winning the World Cup,” he shared.
A significant shift in soccer has occurred since Rara’s playing days, particularly in training facilities and technology, which have greatly improved the training experience for athletes today. “Training and facilities were completely different; now everything is modernized with advanced technology and equipment that we didn’t have back then,” he explained.
Despite stepping into the coaching arena and continuing to play club games, Rara remains as passionate about the sport as ever. “At my age, I still train, coach and play – the passion I have for football has carried me through all these years,” he stated, proving that age is just a number in pursuit of one’s passion.
