Semi Seruvakula, a 29-year-old from Navutu Village in Naitasiri, achieved a remarkable milestone this week by graduating with a Certificate in Fabrication and Welding (Level 3) from Fiji National University (FNU). His journey has been anything but ordinary, as he faced significant setbacks early in life due to peer pressure, which led him to abandon his mechanical engineering studies over a decade ago.
Determined not to let his past define him, Seruvakula returned to his village and initially began working with his father in the fields. However, a turning point came when a friend offered him a position as a security officer. This job opened the door to his education in fabrication and welding, allowing him to finance his studies while working nights.
Reflecting on his struggles, Seruvakula emphasized his journey as one of faith and resilience. “From there, I took one step at a journey of faith and time,” he noted. His father, Venieli Cakausese, the village headman, expressed immense pride in his son’s achievements, acknowledging the hard lessons that shaped him into a strong and independent individual. Cakausese urged young people to pursue education passionately, stating, “There are so many opportunities available. The onus is on you kids to make it happen.”
After a year and a half of hard work and dedication, Seruvakula is now employed at Fast Engineering, where he finds joy in his work and relies on his faith for guidance. “I’m leaning on God to direct my next steps,” he shared, illustrating a hopeful outlook on his future.
This story highlights the transformative power of resilience and the importance of seizing opportunities. Despite facing adversity, Seruvakula’s determination and faith have led him to a promising career. His journey serves as an inspiring testament to the fact that with hard work and perseverance, it is possible to overcome challenges and build a better future.
