Meli Romuakalou Junior, a former Fiji Finals champion and Pacific Games silver medalist, is making a strong comeback to athletics after a two-year hiatus. He recently qualified for the Mini Games in the 400 meters hurdles at the Fiji National Athletics Championship held at HFC Bank Stadium, clocking an impressive time of 56.2 seconds, well below the qualifying standard of 56.8 seconds.
Reflecting on his journey, the 23-year-old athlete shared, “I felt like I haven’t achieved all my dreams.” Despite the challenges of returning to competitive running after a break, Meli has shown determination and resilience. “Coming back wasn’t easy. I’ve been coaching in between, but deep down, I knew I hadn’t achieved all I wanted in the sport. That’s why I returned,” he noted.
Meli, who had previously represented Fiji at the Oceania Championships but was sidelined by injury, credits his older sister with being his biggest supporter. She has been instrumental in helping him with diet and training as he prepares for the upcoming Mini Games, which will take place from June 29 to July 9 in Palau. “Qualifying means a lot to me,” he emphasized, highlighting the significance of this achievement as a new chapter in his athletic career.
His return to the track joins a broader narrative of enthusiastic preparations across Fiji athletics, with many athletes striving for excellence and representation in the upcoming Mini Games. This renewed focus on athletics demonstrates not only Meli’s personal commitment but also a collective spirit among Fiji’s athletes, who are aiming to showcase their talents on an international stage.
With the upcoming competitions, there is a palpable sense of optimism within the Fijian sporting community. Athletes like Meli serve as inspirations, illustrating that perseverance and dedication can lead to new opportunities, reinforcing the hopeful atmosphere surrounding Fiji’s representation in athletics.
