From Setback to Success: How One Teacher Turned Pandemic Challenges into Triumph

For Amele Biu Besetimoala, the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated ‘No Jab, No Job’ policy proved to be a catalyst for remarkable achievements. The 39-year-old former teacher from Sabeto, Nadi, celebrated her graduation with a Bachelor of Teaching in Primary Inservice on Friday at the University of Fiji’s ceremony held at Saweni Campus, Lautoka.

During the pandemic, Besetimoala lost her job due to her refusal to be vaccinated, but rather than succumbing to despair, she transformed her setback into an opportunity for personal growth. “I couldn’t continue teaching during the pandemic because I chose not to be vaccinated,” she explained. However, she embraced her circumstance, believing it was meant to guide her toward higher education.

Besetimoala, married to a villager from Moala Island and a devoted mother of four, faced the challenge of balancing her family responsibilities with her studies. “It wasn’t easy to manage my responsibilities, but I thank God for this achievement,” she expressed, highlighting her gratitude for the support from her husband, parents, and in-laws, dedicating her success to them.

She encouraged others to chase their dreams regardless of their situations. “Age, marriage, or children are not barriers to success. If you have the will, you can achieve anything,” she affirmed. Reflecting on her journey, she underscored the significance of perseverance, stating, “Success isn’t just about having a job; it’s about striving for the highest level of education and personal growth.”
