Semi Seruvakula, a 29-year-old from Navutu Village in Naitasiri, has successfully overcome significant obstacles that once hindered his academic journey. After facing peer pressure that led to a halt in his mechanical engineering studies more than a decade ago, he found new direction and purpose.

On Thursday, Seruvakula celebrated an important achievement by receiving his Level 3 Certificate in Fabrication and Welding at the graduation ceremony held at the Vodafone Arena, organized by Fiji National University (FNU). In a heartfelt reflection on his past, he shared how peer pressure had initially steered him away from education. He returned to his village and suggested to his father that he would contribute by farming alongside him.

However, fate intervened when a friend employed as a security officer offered him a job. This opportunity eventually opened the door for him to pursue his current course of study. Financing his education through his night shifts as a security officer, Seruvakula exemplified perseverance and dedication.

His father, Venieli Cakausese, who serves as the village headman, expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishments. Cakausese noted, “My son may have learnt it the hard way, but through that, he is becoming the strong, independent man we want him to be.” He encouraged young individuals to embrace education and faith, stating that many opportunities await those willing to put in the effort.

After a year and a half of hard work at FNU’s Samabula campus, Semi is now employed at Fast Engineering and is dedicated to his work, continuously relying on his faith to navigate his future paths. “I’m leaning on God to direct my next steps,” he remarked, illustrating his resolve and hope for what lies ahead.
