Amele Biu Besetimoala’s journey during the COVID-19 pandemic is an inspiring example of how setbacks can lead to new beginnings. The 39-year-old former teacher from Sabeto, Nadi, celebrated her graduation on Friday with a Bachelor of Teaching in Primary Inservice at the University of Fiji’s ceremony held at Saweni Campus in Lautoka.
Her decision not to get vaccinated led to her losing her teaching job during the pandemic. However, she viewed this challenge as an opportunity for growth. “I couldn’t continue teaching during the pandemic because I chose not to be vaccinated,” she explained. “But I believe everything happens for a reason. Losing my job gave me the chance to focus on higher education. I’m hopeful to return to teaching next year and continue advancing my studies.”
Balancing her family life, as a mother of four and married to a villager from Moala Island, Lau, alongside her education was a significant challenge for Ms. Besetimoala. “It wasn’t easy to manage my responsibilities, but I thank God for this achievement,” she shared. She expressed deep gratitude to her husband, parents, and in-laws for their steadfast support, dedicating her degree to them.
Ms. Besetimoala also urged others to chase their dreams, emphasizing that “age, marriage, or children are not barriers to success. If you have the will, you can achieve anything.” Reflecting on her journey, she highlighted that true success goes beyond employment, focusing instead on educational and personal growth.
