Amele Biu Besetimoala, a 39-year-old former teacher from Sabeto, Nadi, turned a challenging situation during the COVID-19 pandemic into a remarkable opportunity for growth. After losing her job due to the ‘No Jab, No Job’ policy for refusing vaccination, she chose to focus on her education. She graduated with a Bachelor of Teaching in Primary Inservice during the University of Fiji’s 2024 ceremony at Saweni Campus in Lautoka, showcasing her resilience and determination.

Reflecting on her journey, Ms. Besetimoala expressed gratitude for the opportunity to advance her education despite the adversity she faced. “I couldn’t continue teaching during the pandemic because I chose not to be vaccinated,” she shared. However, she believes that everything happens for a reason and her job loss allowed her to concentrate on her studies. She aims to return to teaching next year while continuing to pursue further education.

Balancing family life with her studies was no easy task for Ms. Besetimoala, who is married to a villager from Moala Island and is a mother of four. “It wasn’t easy to manage my responsibilities, but I thank God for this achievement,” she remarked. Ms. Besetimoala dedicated her degree to her supportive husband, parents, and in-laws, acknowledging their role in her success.

Her experience serves as an inspiration to others, as she urged everyone to chase their dreams regardless of challenges posed by age, marriage, or parenting. “If you have the will, you can achieve anything,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of perseverance.

Her journey highlights a positive message about resilience and the potential to transform setbacks into opportunities. Ms. Besetimoala’s story is a testament to personal growth and the relentless pursuit of knowledge, reminding us all that success is not solely defined by job status, but rather by the commitment to education and self-betterment.

This inspiring tale encourages others to rise above obstacles and embrace the journey towards their goals, demonstrating that determination can indeed lead to triumph over adversity.
