Amele Biu Besetimoala, a 39-year-old former teacher from Sabeto, Nadi, turned the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic into a pathway for personal growth and achievement. Despite losing her job due to her decision against vaccination, she utilized this setback as an opportunity to advance her education, graduating on Friday with a Bachelor of Teaching in Primary Inservice from the University of Fiji at their ceremony held in Lautoka.
Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Besetimoala expressed a sense of purpose in her journey, stating, “I believe everything happens for a reason. Losing my job gave me the chance to focus on higher education.” She shared her aspirations to return to teaching next year while also pursuing further studies.
A dedicated mother of four and married to a villager from Moala Island, she navigated the difficulties of balancing family life with her academic pursuits. “It wasn’t easy to manage my responsibilities, but I thank God for this achievement,” she remarked, acknowledging the vital support from her husband, parents, and in-laws. This degree, she dedicated to them, serves as a symbol of her hard work and resilience.
