Despite facing setbacks at last year’s Fiji Finals, Sulie-Tanya Matea demonstrated remarkable perseverance by returning this year to claim a silver medal in the intermediate girls shot-put event. The Year 12 student from Swami Viveknanda College in Nadi achieved a throw of 11.20 meters, showcasing her dedication and improvement since last year’s competition.

Matea dedicated her medal to her late grandfather, Sovea Tabua, who passed away recently, stating that this achievement was also for her family, coaches, and school. “Last year I did not achieve anything so this year I switched my mindset,” she reflected, emphasizing her spiritual and mental growth through more technical training and strengthening exercises.

Under the guidance of Mustafa Fall, a former champion thrower from Marist Brothers High School, Matea expressed a strategic approach to her competition experience, suggesting that focusing on smaller competitions helps her develop. Looking forward, she aspires to pursue a career as a marine biologist or a veterinarian.

Matea’s journey epitomizes resilience and determination, echoing the journeys of other athletes like Maryann Macedru, who won gold at the Fiji Finals and set her own record, and Naibili Vatunisolo, who has made impressive strides in para-athletics, making significant impacts in their respective fields. The spirit of these young athletes highlights the vibrant potential within Fiji’s youth sports community, fostering a culture of achievement and inspiration for future generations.
