Lorosio Rafaele Qaqa, a talented free-hand tattoo artist from Vunitarawau in Qeleni, Taveuni, is making a name for himself in Fiji’s tattoo industry. His artistry is marked by precision and creativity, which is commendable for someone who has turned a childhood passion into a thriving business.
Initially working as a security officer in Nadi, Lorosio struggled with low earnings that didn’t meet his family’s needs. Motivated by a local TV feature on a successful Fijian entrepreneur, he decided to return to his first love—art and drawing. Through self-directed research and learning, he developed his skills in tattooing, starting with a homemade tattoo machine and providing services to neighbors.
The transition from security work to tattooing was not immediate. Lorosio faced challenges typical of starting a small business, including building a client base and honing his techniques. He cleverly adapted to the market by choosing to work as a mobile tattoo artist, making it easier for clients with hectic schedules to book appointments. His business model has proven successful, leading to significant earnings with an impressive leg wrap tattoo recently priced at $1600, up from initial tattoos that fetched $30 to $40.
Lorosio’s work is distinctive and has found a clientele among local resorts, where he not only earns but also supports his family. After returning from a work trip in Golan Heights, where he could invest in professional equipment, he acquired a new tattoo machine that elevated his work quality and offerings.
He balances his passion for tattooing with community involvement, planning projects aimed at assisting local youth, particularly school dropouts and those affected by rising drug use. By fostering talent in his community, Lorosio hopes to inspire young people to pursue their passions and utilize their skills for personal growth.
In a time where many are navigating financial hardship, Lorosio’s journey illustrates the transformative power of perseverance and creativity. He encourages aspiring artists to explore their latent talents, demonstrating that with commitment, individuals can carve their paths to success. Today, Lorosio is not just creating art, but also leaving a legacy that inspires hope and resilience within his community.
