Semi Seruvakula, a 29-year-old from Navutu Village in Naitasiri, has proven that setbacks can lead to new beginnings. Eleven years ago, peer pressure derailed his studies in mechanical engineering, leading him to believe his future was bleak. However, his determination saw him overcome these challenges and ultimately celebrate a major achievement.
On Thursday, he proudly received his Certificate in Fabrication and Welding (Level 3) during the graduation ceremony at Vodafone Arena, organized by Fiji National University (FNU). Reflecting on his path, Mr. Seruvakula shared how peer pressure initially pushed him to return to his village and work alongside his father in agriculture. A turning point came when he received an unexpected job offer from a friend working as a security officer, which opened the door to his current academic pursuits.
Funding his education through his earnings as a security officer, he demonstrated resilience and commitment to his goals. His father, Venieli Cakausese, who serves as the village headman, expressed immense pride in his son’s achievements. He recognized the challenges Semi faced but highlighted that they contributed significantly to his growth into a strong, independent man.
Cakausese emphasized the importance of pursuing education and faith, encouraging young people to capitalize on the opportunities available to them. After a year and a half of dedicated study at FNU’s Samabula campus, Mr. Seruvakula is now employed at Fast Engineering, where he is thriving in his new role. He continues to rely on his faith to navigate the next chapters of his career.
This inspiring story of resilience and determination serves as a reminder that setbacks can be transformed into stepping stones, encouraging others to remain steadfast in the pursuit of their dreams. The journey of Semi Seruvakula embodies hope for many young individuals facing similar challenges, illustrating that with hard work and faith, one can pave a successful path forward.
