Semi Seruvakula, a 29-year-old from Navutu Village in Naitasiri, has defied the odds after facing significant challenges in his educational journey due to peer pressure. Eleven years ago, a brief detour in his mechanical engineering studies seemed to mark the end of his academic ambitions. Yet, Seruvakula refused to let setbacks define him.
On Thursday, he celebrated a remarkable achievement by receiving a Certificate in Fabrication and Welding (Level 3) at the Fiji National University (FNU) graduation ceremony held at the Vodafone Arena. Reflecting on his past, Seruvakula shared that returning home to farm with his father seemed like the best option after succumbing to peer pressure. However, a turning point arrived when a friend offered him a job as a security officer, eventually paving the way for his enrollment in a welding course.
Through hard work and dedication, Seruvakula financed his education by balancing his studies with night shifts as a security officer. His father, Venieli Cakausese, the village headman, expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishments. Cakausese observed that while Semis’ journey wasn’t easy, it has shaped him into a strong and independent individual. He encouraged the youth to pursue education actively and reminded them of the many opportunities available.
After 18 months of studies at FNU’s Samabula campus, Seruvakula’s future looks bright as he is currently employed at Fast Engineering. He attributes his success to his faith and continues to seek divine guidance in his career path. “I’m leaning on God to direct my next steps,” he remarked.
This inspiring story underscores the importance of resilience and the power of education, showcasing that challenges can lead to growth and newfound opportunities. It serves as a hopeful reminder for young individuals facing obstacles to persevere and trust in their potential for success.
