Transitioning from a science background to accounting and economics was a challenging journey for 21-year-old Sanskar Kapadia. His hard work and perseverance paid off when he, along with Kamal Prasad and Fatima Siddeqa, was awarded the Most Outstanding Accounting and Finance Student (Department) Award 2024 at the University of Fiji School of Business and Economics ceremony held in Lautoka last week.
“It wasn’t easy to shift to a completely new field, and I struggled with concepts I was unfamiliar with,” Mr. Kapadia reflected. However, with the encouragement of his lecturers and a commitment to hard work, he developed the confidence needed to succeed. Balancing academic responsibilities with career preparation posed additional challenges. “Managing deadlines, assignments, and preparing for the future wasn’t straightforward,” he added. To tackle these hurdles, he stayed organized, set clear priorities, and worked part-time after classes to maximize his time.
Kamal Prasad, who also faced her own set of challenges as a student, drew inspiration from her mother’s advice to strive for achievement. Despite financial difficulties, particularly concerning transport costs, she credited her father as her biggest supporter and her friend Ruqayyah Hakim for helping her overcome academic obstacles.
Fatima Aiyesha Siddeqa, the dux of Nadi Muslim College in 2021, cited the sacrifices made by her mother and grandmother as critical motivation in her pursuit of success. “I never wanted their efforts to go to waste,” she said, emphasizing that success, for her, extends beyond personal achievements. “It’s about leaving a legacy wherever I go. As the eldest daughter, I’ve always aspired to make my family proud.” The pride she sees in her family, especially in her aunt, who has been a consistent source of support, serves as her greatest reward.
This inspiring story of determination and resilience highlights the power of support systems in overcoming challenges and achieving academic success. These young students not only excelled in their studies but also demonstrated a commitment to honoring their families’ sacrifices, proving that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible. Their achievements serve as a beacon of hope for others facing similar transitions in life.
