While many students are enjoying their holiday breaks and engaging in festive activities, 16-year-old Ilaitia Tagicakibau is making a different choice. Instead of an ordinary holiday, the Sila Central High School student is competing with his district team at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s, taking place at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
This event marks Tagicakibau’s debut with the Nakelo Babas team, representing his local area of Naimalavau in Nakelo, Tailevu. Reflecting on his journey, he mentioned, “I’ve been playing rugby since I was young.” He expresses a strong desire to advance his rugby career and often prays for opportunities that will allow him to pursue this passion. His decision to join the Nakelo Babas came from the encouragement of a fellow village youth, prompting him to train with the team and participate in tournaments.
Emphasizing the importance of a competitive mindset, Tagicakibau stated, “Our coach advises us to treat each game as a final.” He looks up to Kitione Salawa, a flanker for the Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians, and plays in the same flanker role for his school’s Under-16 team, in addition to participating in rugby league as a center.
He is thankful for the unwavering support from his family regarding his rugby aspirations. Despite facing criticism, Tagicakibau remains focused on his goals, seeking advice from more experienced players to enhance his skills. He has a backup plan in case rugby doesn’t work out: he intends to join the British Army.
This story exemplifies the determination and passion of young athletes striving for their dreams while balancing their studies and sports. Tagicakibau’s commitment not only resonates with aspiring rugby players but also inspires others to pursue their passions despite challenges.
Overall, this reflects a hopeful and positive outlook on youth involvement in sports, highlighting the potential for personal growth and future opportunities.
