Heleina Young is filled with gratitude as she makes her return to track and field after a six-year absence spent playing rugby. The 24-year-old, previously part of the Queensland Reds and the Fijiana sevens team, is now preparing to compete in the 100, 200, and 400-meter events at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games.

Young expressed her appreciation for being named to the Fiji squad, noting, “It’s always a privilege.” She highlighted that returning to athletics was a part of her journey following a knee injury that sidetracked her rugby career. Having spent eight to nine months in rehabilitation after her injury, Young discovered her love for running again during her recovery, realizing she missed the exhilaration of the track and the encouragement of her long-time coach, Bola Tafo’ou.

Struggling with the transition from rugby to running, Young decided to focus on sprinting, finding it easier to manage post-injury. “It doesn’t really matter which sport you are in; you put in the same amount of effort,” she asserted.

With aspirations of winning medals in either individual races or relays, Young acknowledged the pressures that come with returning to competition but stated, “All I can do is my best.” She expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support from her family, which serves as a source of motivation throughout her athletic endeavors.

Young’s comeback is not an isolated instance in Fiji’s athletics scene. Similar inspiring narratives can be drawn from her fellow athletes, such as Meli Romuakalou Junior, who is also making a return to track after a hiatus due to injuries and aspirations for the Pacific Mini Games. Their journeys highlight the resilience and determination within the sporting community, showcasing how athletes adapt and pursue their dreams despite setbacks.

The Fiji Sports Council’s recent initiatives to foster athletic talent reflect the growing enthusiasm for sports in the nation. Young’s determination and the support she’s received from organizations like the FSC signal hopeful prospects for Fiji’s representation in athletics on the international stage.

As Young continues her preparations, there’s a shared optimism that the next generation of Fijian athletes can overcome challenges and achieve success, embodying the spirit of determination and perseverance that runs deep in the Fijian athletic community. With a focus on overcoming obstacles and striving for excellence, these athletes, including Young, aim to inspire not only their peers but also aspiring athletes across the region.
