Junior golfer Isireli Digitaki is channeling his energy into golf during his recovery from a collarbone injury sustained while playing rugby. The year-10 student from Nabua Secondary School has been competitive in the sport lately, participating in the Fiji Golf Club Monthly Medal Stroke event, which took place last Saturday, and was sponsored by B. Prasad & Sons and Swire Shipping.
After being advised to take a two-year break from contact sports due to his injury, Digitaki found solace in golf, a sport he has enjoyed since childhood. “Golf has been a great recovery sport for me,” he stated, reflecting on his improving skills and enjoyment in the game.
Digitaki highlighted the support he has received, particularly from Stuart Murray, who sponsored his entry fees. He also expressed gratitude towards his uncles—professional golfers Tomasi Tuivuna, Taitusi Tuivuci, and Anasa Seruvatu—who have been mentoring him. The support from Fiji Golf Club captain Zavir Khan has also been instrumental in advancing junior golfers through various clinics and sponsorship initiatives.
Although Digitaki made his competitive debut at last year’s Fiji Golf Open, he is eager to enhance his skills and looks forward to future tournaments. Despite missing parts of the BSP Summer Cup, he returned to compete in the final round last Saturday.
In his reflections on the experience of competing, Digitaki remarked, “I enjoy golf because it gives us opportunities we wouldn’t normally have.” He emphasized the importance of the prizes awarded, like vouchers and kitchen appliances, which can be beneficial for many junior athletes like himself.
With one year remaining in his recovery journey, Digitaki remains hopeful about the possibility of returning to rugby in the future while furthering his passion for golf.
This story illustrates the resilience of young athletes in adversity and the positive impact of community support in their lives. Digitaki’s journey serves as an encouragement to other young sports enthusiasts to explore new paths in the face of challenges.
