Isireli Digitaki, a junior golfer from Nabua Secondary School, is focusing his energies on golf as he recovers from a collarbone injury suffered while playing rugby. The year-10 student has recently participated in the Fiji Golf Club Monthly Medal Stroke event held last Saturday, which was sponsored by B. Prasad & Sons and Swire Shipping.
After receiving medical advice to take a two-year hiatus from contact sports to allow his collarbone to heal, Digitaki turned to golf, a sport he has cherished since childhood. “Golf has been a great recovery sport for me,” he shared, noting his progress and increased enjoyment in the game.
The support he has received has been crucial. Digitaki expressed his appreciation for the sponsorship from Stuart Murray, which helped cover his entry fees. He also acknowledged the mentorship of his uncles—professional golfers Tomasi Tuivuna, Taitusi Tuivuci, and Anasa Seruvatu—as significant influences in his golfing journey. Additionally, Fiji Golf Club captain Zavir Khan has played a vital role in fostering junior talent through clinics and various sponsorship programs.
Although Digitaki made his debut in competitive golf during last year’s Fiji Golf Open, he is keen to further develop his skills and participate in more tournaments. He previously missed portions of the BSP Summer Cup but was thrilled to compete in the event’s final round last Saturday.
Reflecting on his golfing experiences, Digitaki remarked, “I enjoy golf because it gives us opportunities we wouldn’t normally have.” He underscored the value of the prizes awarded, such as vouchers and kitchen appliances, highlighting the positive impact these incentives have on junior athletes.
With a year left in his recovery journey, Digitaki feels optimistic about potentially returning to rugby while simultaneously nurturing his passion for golf.
This story showcases the resilience of young athletes facing challenges and the supportive role of the community in their pursuits. Digitaki’s journey serves as inspiration for other budding sports enthusiasts to seek new opportunities and remain hopeful in the face of adversity.
