Maika Ratuvere, an 18-year-old rugby talent, is dreaming of a future in medicine while making his mark in sports. As the fullback of the successful Queen Victoria School (QVS) Under-18 team that clinched the prestigious Deans Trophy, Ratuvere is keen on pursuing a career in nursing or as a health inspector after his rugby days.
Recently participating in the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament at Ratu Cakobau Park, Ratuvere expressed his enthusiasm for testing his fitness in sevens rugby following the Deans competition. He noted that QVS has been an ideal environment for him, promoting independence and fostering strong camaraderie among teammates.
His rugby journey commenced in the Kaji rugby days with teams from Nasinu and Tailevu, further enriched by his experience playing as a halfback for the U15 rugby league school side. Ratuvere portrays rugby as both a passion and a hobby, emphasizing the importance of balancing sports with academics. He acknowledges the challenges of managing both but remains committed to excelling in both areas.
Despite facing injuries throughout his athletic career, Ratuvere has shown resilience and determination, stating that discipline learned through rugby has greatly influenced his life. Although he was initially selected for the U18 Fiji Secondary School extended squad, injuries led to his withdrawal. However, he remains optimistic and encourages others to pursue their passions.
In addition to rugby, Ratuvere has roots in Batiri village in Nadroga and engages in volleyball. He remains focused on enhancing his fitness and is currently seeking a holiday job to support his aspirations.
This story not only highlights Ratuvere’s athletic ability and potential but also serves as an inspiring reminder of how young athletes can balance their ambitions in sports with their educational pursuits. With determination and support, they can carve out successful futures both on the field and in their chosen professions.
