Maika Ratuvere, the fullback for the winning Under-18 Deans rugby team, has set his sights on a future in medicine alongside his passion for rugby. At just 18 years old, this talented athlete from Bagata, Cakaudrove, aims to become either a nurse or a health inspector.

Recently, Ratuvere showcased his skills while representing the Queen Victoria School (QVS) old boys Under-19 team at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori. His outstanding performance throughout the year was instrumental in the QVS U18 team’s triumph in the prestigious Deans trophy.

Ratuvere stated, “I wanted to test my fitness level in sevens rugby after the conclusion of the Deans rugby competition.” He appreciated his experience at QVS, emphasizing the independence and camaraderie fostered through school boarding life.

His journey in rugby began early, starting with the Kaji rugby days alongside teams from Nasinu and Tailevu. He also has experience in rugby league, having played as a halfback for the U15 school side during his time at St Joseph the Worker Primary School in Nakasi.

Ratuvere expressed that rugby is not just a sport for him but a passion that allows him to demonstrate his abilities. “I want to pursue a career in medicine for an opportunity to help people,” he emphasized, revealing his resilience after facing multiple injuries during his athletic journey.

Balancing sports and academics has proven to be a challenge, but Ratuvere is committed to giving his best in both realms. “There is a tight bond within the team in and off the field,” he noted, reflecting on the essential values of discipline and teamwork he has cultivated through rugby.

Despite facing setbacks—including being named in the U18 Fiji Secondary School extended squad but later being dropped due to injury—Ratuvere remains hopeful and determined. “When you’re good at something, just go for it,” he advised.

With maternal ties to Batiri village in Nadroga and interests that extend to volleyball, Ratuvere is focused on improving his fitness and is actively seeking a holiday job to gain additional experience.

This article highlights not only the aspirations of a young athlete but also the importance of balancing sports with education, resilience in the face of challenges, and the significant impact of teamwork and discipline in achieving personal goals. Ratuvere’s journey serves as an inspiration for many young athletes, demonstrating that with dedication and passion, dreams can be pursued alongside fulfilling careers.
