Maika Ratuvere, an accomplished fullback from the Under-18 Deans tournament, is setting his sights on a dual path: a career in rugby and a future in medicine. At just 18 years old, Ratuvere, hailing from Bagata in Cakaudrove, dreams of becoming either a nurse or a health inspector.
Recently, he showcased his skills representing the Queen Victoria School (QVS) old boys Under-19 side at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. Ratuvere played a pivotal role in guiding the QVS Under-18 team to victory in the Deans trophy this year.
“I wanted to test my fitness level in sevens rugby after the conclusion of the Deans rugby competition,” he shared, noting that attending QVS provided him with valuable independence through the experience of school boarding life and the formation of brotherly bonds among teammates.
Ratuvere’s rugby journey began in Kaji rugby with the Nasinu and Tailevu teams. Additionally, he played rugby league for the U15 school side as a halfback, nurturing his athletic talents since his early days at St Joseph the Worker Primary School in Nakasi.
He is passionate about rugby, utilizing it as a platform to showcase his athletic prowess. “It’s my hobby as well, and I want to pursue a career in medicine for an opportunity to help people,” he explained, reflecting on how his experiences, including past injuries, have only fueled his determination to succeed both on the field and in the classroom.
Balancing sports with academic obligations presents challenges, but Ratuvere emphasizes the importance of versatility and commitment. “There is a tight bond within the team in and off the field,” he stated, suggesting that teamwork extends beyond just the game.
Despite being named to the U18 Fiji Secondary school extended squad, Ratuvere faced setbacks due to injury but remains optimistic. His commitment to training and improvement signifies his dedication to both his athletic and academic pursuits.
With familial ties to Batiri village in Nadroga and an interest in volleyball, Ratuvere continues to train diligently while also seeking a holiday job to support his ambitions.
In summary, Maika Ratuvere exemplifies the spirit of a young athlete determined to forge a successful path in both sports and medicine. His journey not only showcases his talent in rugby but also his commitment to helping others, reminding us that pursuing diverse passions can lead to a fulfilling future.
