Maika Ratuvere, an 18-year-old rugby talent from Bagata, Cakaudrove, is not only making his mark on the rugby field but also has aspirations in the medical field. As the fullback for the Queen Victoria School (QVS) Under-18 team, he recently contributed to the team’s success by winning the prestigious Deans trophy.

With a keen interest in pursuing a career in medicine, Ratuvere is looking towards becoming either a nurse or a health inspector once his rugby career progresses. “I want to help people,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to making a positive impact on others’ lives.

In addition to rugby, Ratuvere has participated in the recent R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament for the QVS old boys Under-19 side, seeking to assess his fitness after the Deans rugby competition. Reflecting on his time at QVS, he expressed his appreciation for the independence and camaraderie that the school boarding life has provided.

Ratuvere’s journey in sports began at an early age, starting with Kaji rugby through the Nasinu and Tailevu teams. He also played rugby league as a halfback for the U15 school team while attending St Joseph the Worker Primary School in Nakasi.

Despite facing challenges, including injuries that momentarily hindered his progress, Ratuvere has demonstrated resilience and determination, balancing his athletic pursuits with academic responsibilities. He acknowledged, “It’s a bit of a challenge to juggle the two but I try my best.”

Ratuvere also highlighted the importance of discipline learned through rugby and the close-knit relationships he has formed with his teammates both on and off the field. He continues to push himself in training to enhance his fitness and is currently seeking holiday employment.
