In a village in Bua, residents have had no choice but to rely on a nearby river for vital daily activities such as cooking, washing, and personal hygiene. Headman Josefa Biraki highlighted the health hazards associated with using the contaminated water source, stating, “A lot of people got sick because they drank from the polluted and contaminated river.”
Despite repeated appeals to the government for improved sanitation and access to clean water, the community has struggled for years without any change in their situation. Biraki noted that this is not an isolated problem, as many villages share similar challenges.
However, the situation has recently taken a positive turn. With the support of Rotary Pacific Water, the village has finally received safe drinking water and proper sanitation facilities. “It’s something we have been praying for, for years,” Biraki expressed, reflecting the community’s relief and gratitude.
Divisional planning officer Setareki Dakuiboca acknowledged the impact of the NGO’s initiative, stating that it has greatly improved life for vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
This transformation highlights the importance of community support and NGO involvement in addressing basic needs and improving public health. It serves as a reminder of the power of collaboration in driving positive change.
In summary, while the village has faced significant struggles with access to clean water, the recent intervention has brought hope and relief to its residents, highlighting the ongoing need for such support in underserved communities.
