Eliki Qalubau, a passionate educator from Mokani Village in Tailevu, embodies the belief that “every small sacrifice made today will lead to great reward tomorrow.” At just 27 years old, he has already devoted four years to the teaching profession, continually inspired to give back to his community and shape future generations through education.
Eliki’s journey began after he graduated secondary school, accepting a teaching position in remote primary schools, which tested his resilience and adaptability. Reflecting on his experiences, he stated, “I took on the primary school teaching position without any questions asked,” even though his qualifications were for secondary education. His commitment and perseverance eventually led him to Suva Grammar School, where he currently teaches.
Beginning his career in 2022 at Vunimono Sanatan Primary School, Eliki swiftly moved to Toga District School the following year. In 2024, he transitioned to the secondary education sector as a teacher at Vaturova Koroalau High School in Cakaudrove province. Despite the challenges of adapting to rural schools without electricity or network connectivity, he found the sacrifices worth the rewards, indicating the immense fulfillment that comes with dedication to education.
Eliki credits much of his strength to his mother, whose unwavering support inspired him throughout his journey. He recognizes the impact of family encouragement, stating, “I am blessed because she shows up for me no matter what.” This connection fuels his passion and reinforces his commitment to his students, as he balances teaching during the day with continuing his studies at night, working towards a second postgraduate diploma in education alongside a diploma in international relations and diplomacy.
The challenges faced by Eliki resonate with other educators across Fiji, such as Leone Vulakauvaki and Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, who also share in facing obstacles in rural and urban school environments. Their collective stories emphasize the ongoing commitment required to nurture a love for learning in students despite external difficulties. In similar fashion to Eliki, these educators leverage their experiences and support systems to inspire the next generation.
Eliki’s story not only highlights the personal challenges that teachers face but also underscores the broader narrative of resilience nurtured by community support and individual passion. His dedication encapsulates the transformative potential of education, reminding us that even small sacrifices can lead to significant upward trajectories in both the educators’ and students’ lives. Each step taken towards personal growth and professional fulfillment embodies hope, encouraging both teachers and students to overcome their challenges and aim for success.
